Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

The Cadillac Escalade goes green next summer, when Cadillac adopts the two-mode hybrid powertrain recently introduced in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Mechanically identical, the Escalade Hybrid combines a 6.0-liter V-8, two electric motors, and a battery pack. Output is 332 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque. Although EPA figures are not yet available, GM is promising a 50 percent improvement in city fuel economy; with the standard Escalade rated at 15 mpg city, that would put the Hybrid figure at around 21 mpg.

The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid will be available with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The vehicle is rated to tow a maximum of 5700 lbs (4wd) or 6000 lbs (2wd).

The Cadillac Escalade is not about understatement, so it is perhaps to be expected that the Cadillac Escalade spells out Hybrid along its lower body in the biggest letters of any hybrid vehicle. After all, what's the point of doing your little part for mother earth if you can't boast about it?

The new Cadillac Escalade is here. The Cadillac Escalade will go hybrid in the 2008 model year, along with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. GM claims a 25 percent increase in fuel economy. Why upgrade? Aside from the smooth new styling--check out the size of that wreath-and-crest badge!--the Cadillac Escalade has more power, more features, and a far nicer interior. Key bragging points include: a larger 6.2-liter V-8 with 403 hp (58 more than before); a six-speed automatic; a power liftgate and power running boards; standard stability control and side curtain air bags; optional 22-inch chrome wheels; plus available navigation, remote starting, and a rear-view camera.

The regular Cadillac Escalade hits showrooms in January of 2006. Those who prefer the extra-long ESV or the neo-pickup EXT will have to wait until April to get their new rides. We spotted General Motors Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz puffing on a stogie while getting chauffeured in a pearl white new 'Slade with double dubs. If the guy who can have any GM vehicle likes it, it must be good, right?
